WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING
MIA WURGAFT
Juilliard MFA, Class of 2025
"This reminded me of what training was again. In the professional world I was so focused on putting out a product, and this was an opportunity to be a student again."
ARIEL SANDINO
UNCSA BFA, Class of 2025
"This taught me how to dive deeper into my pieces so that my connection to the text is specific and imaginative, but also bold."
NICK BYERS
BROWN MFA, Class of 2025
"I learned how to break down text (Shakespeare was tough for me prior), make things more personal, and so much more. I'm a more well-rounded actor because of it."
You won't know this unless you've had good training...
The flow is different
Shakepeare wrote in a pre-Freudian era, meaning subtext wasn't as popular back then as it is today. If you can't ride the flow of the classical language...
**AUDIENCES WILL FEEL TRAPPED!**
Words mean different things
You might think "wherefore" in Shakespeare means "where," but it doesn't. Did you know "will" is a sexual innuendo? If you don't know the difference between "thy" and "you"...
**YOU WON'T MAKE SENSE!**
Religion was HUGE
Characters who take oaths are putting themselves in a life or death situation! If characters address a religious leader informally, it could be their demise! Characters who cast spells are not playing pretend!
**DON'T MINIMIZE THE STAKES!**
Whether it's on stage or in the audience, we've all seen it...
BAD SHAKESPEARE!!!!!!
Even if you have good natural instincts, lack of quality Shakespeare training leads to mediocre performances at best, and crippling self-consciousness at worst.
Broad-stroke, one-dimensional choices
Excessive physical and vocal tension
“Showing” or “indicating” the character
Destroying the integrity of the text, and therefore the scene
Dreading rehearsals, thus underworking and underperforming
Your true talent/humanity/uniqueness NOT being revealed!
If you feel intimidated by Shakespeare, that's natural. But if you want to be confident, it's important that you really dive in.
This course will help you scale that mountain with ease.
